What does uptime percentage mean?

Uptime percentage measures how much time a service is operational over a given period. A 99.9% uptime SLA means the provider guarantees no more than 43 minutes and 50 seconds of downtime per month.

The difference between "nines" matters more than you'd think. Going from 99.9% to 99.99% reduces allowed downtime from ~44 minutes/month to ~4 minutes/month — a 10x improvement.

How to calculate downtime from uptime

The formula is simple:

Downtime = Total Period x (1 - Uptime% / 100)

For example, 99.9% uptime over 30 days:

30 days x 24 hours x 60 minutes x (1 - 0.999) = 43.2 minutes
